The Fairmount Park Racetrack is a flat-track raceway featuring Thoroughbred racing and, until recently, standardbred harness racing. The track opened in 1925, and the racing surface is a one-mile dirt oval, with straight track chutes for six furlong and 1ΒΌ mile races. Among a variety of gambling incentives including video slots and OTB services, the track is home to Horse Hooky Tuesdays—a weekly, midday, midweek event well worth a visit. While the American Bottom used to be the home to a number of horse tracks—including the Cahokia Downs near Alorton, well known for its harness racing—Fairmount Park is the only active horse track in Illinois outside of the Chicago metro area.
